Appointment of James Fryer-Spedding as Diocesan Chancellor

The Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev'd James Newcome has appointed James Fryer-Spedding to be Chancellor of the Diocese of Carlisle.

James has been Deputy Chancellor since 2019 and succeeds Geoffrey Tattersall KC.

The Chancellor is the judge of the consistory court of the diocese, which rules on matters of ecclesiastical law, chiefly concerning changes to church buildings. The Chancellor is also the Vicar General, with responsibility for marriage licences and certain other Diocesan business.

This is a part-time role, and James continues his practice in Chambers, specialising in Chancery litigation.
