Civil Fees Clerk 9 St John Street Chambers


Overview

9 St John Street is a leading set of barristers based in Manchester comprising of 10 Queen's Counsel and 100 Juniors. A vacancy has arisen for a Fees Clerk to join the team on a full-time basis.

Experience of fee collection in a barrister’s chambers or legal environment is preferred. Candidates with experience of family and/or criminal billing are also encouraged to apply.

Hours of work: 08:30 - 17:00

Starting salary: Dependant on experience

Location: Manchester

Holiday entitlement: 20 - 25 days per year rising with years of service but dependant on experience

  • Responsibility for fee collection for Chambers as part of a team;
  • Discussing and chasing aged debt for the individual Barristers;
  • Liaising with individual Barristers to identify debts which require special attention;
  • Identifying troublesome debt and discussing with Management;
  • Liaising with Solicitors to resolve outstanding debt;
  • Dealing with incoming mail/e-mail relating to fees;
  • Dealing with any fee reductions, processing of cheques and BACS payments, interim payments and success fee reductions.

Criminal and Family Fees Clerk 9 St John Street Chambers


Overview

9 St John Street is a leading set of barristers based in Manchester comprising of 10 Queen's Counsel and 100 Juniors. A vacancy has arisen for a Fees Clerk to join the team on a full-time basis.

Reporting to: Senior Fees Clerk

Hours of work: 08:30 - 17:00

Starting salary: Dependant on experience

Location: Manchester

Holiday entitlement: 20 - 25 days per year rising with years of service but dependant on experience

 

Main responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring efficient and streamlined fees systems for Chambers as part of a team
  • Billing defence graduated fees in accordance with the correct scheme using the LAA online portal.
  • Billing prosecution graduated fees in accordance with the relevant CPS Graduated Fee Manual of Guidance and correct scheme.
  • Billing and collection of Family Graduated and VHCC Fees
  • Processing of payments
  • General administrative duties.
  • Dealing with incoming mail/e-mail relating to fees

 

The successful candidate will be used to dealing with high volumes of information and working to deadlines, highly organised, numerate and professional, with a can-do approach to work.
Calm under pressure, punctual, reliable and flexible and a supportive team player.

Those applying should preferably have experience of billing or fee chasing within a Barristers Chambers or other legal environment.

Deputy Practice Manager for the Business and Property Team and Employment Team 9 St John Street Chambers


Overview

We are inviting applications to join one of Manchester’s leading chambers as a Deputy Practice Manager. The successful candidate will be joining a specialist clerking team looking after the interests of our established Business and Property, and Employment Teams. Both teams are ranked in Chambers UK Bar 2021.

The appointed person will be responsible for diary management and fee negotiation. In addition, they will work in conjunction with the Practice Manager and Senior Clerk in the promotion of the two teams and will deputise for the Practice Manager when needed. They will be a confident decision maker, possess good judgment and be able to effectively perform their role without supervision.

The successful candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to demonstrate effective problem-solving and strong organisational capabilities. As well as encouraging and developing relationships with our clients, the candidate must have experience in mentoring junior team members and motivating them to ensure high standards are consistently met. 

Experience within a clerking or legal environment will be a distinct advantage but we will also consider candidates with the relevant skills who have a commitment to learn new tasks.

Training will be provided.

Salary:            Negotiable dependent upon experience

Hours:            8:45am – 6.00pm (1hr lunch)

Holidays:         25 days holiday
